Alignment or balancing: which does a shaking car need?
Wheel alignment and wheel balancing solve different problems. Alignment concerns the angles of the wheels. Balancing addresses uneven weight in a tire and wheel assembly. A shaking car may need either service, neither service or additional repair, so describe the symptom before choosing a package.
For a Pompano Beach driver, “it shakes on I-95” is a useful start. “It begins around a particular speed, I feel it in the seat, and it started immediately after a tire change” is much more useful. Those details help a technician choose the first checks.
Notice when it happens
Without deliberately recreating an unsafe condition, write down whether the vibration appeared during steady driving, braking, acceleration or a turn. Record the approximate speed range and where you felt it. A steering wheel vibration and a vibration through the floor are observations, not confirmed diagnoses.
Also note the event that came first. A pothole impact, curb contact, tire installation or long period parked may be relevant. Bring the recent invoice if work was done elsewhere. The purpose is to preserve the sequence, not decide who caused the problem.
Understand what each service can change
Michelin explains that balancing corrects weight distribution in the rotating assembly, while alignment adjusts wheel angles to the vehicle's specifications. Neither service repairs a damaged tire or worn suspension component.
Uneven wear, an off-center steering wheel or a pull can justify an alignment evaluation, but they do not prove that an adjustment is the entire repair. Existing wear will not disappear after the angles are corrected. Ask whether the tire condition itself may continue to affect ride quality.
Give the shop a symptom note
- Vehicle year, make, model and any wheel or suspension modifications.
- Approximate speed and driving condition when the problem appears.
- Whether the vibration is in the wheel, seat, pedal or whole vehicle.
- Any recent impact, tire service or change in tire pressure.
- Whether the symptom is constant or comes and goes.
- Any warning lights, visible tire damage or change in steering control.
Do not keep highway testing a severe vibration. If a tire has a bulge, rapid air loss or visible damage, or the vehicle is difficult to control, stop safely and arrange assistance.
Ask what was checked before authorizing more work
A useful explanation should connect the recommendation to an observation or measurement. Was an imbalance found? Were wheel angles outside specification? Did the inspection reveal damage or looseness that must be corrected first?
After the service, ask which symptom should improve and what the next step is if it remains. A before-and-after alignment report is useful, but it does not replace confirming the original complaint.
