Can I keep driving with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady, it is usually safe to drive in, but do not leave it for weeks. If it is flashing, the engine is misfiring and unburned fuel can damage the catalytic converter. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration and get it looked at the same day.
The parts store read my code for free. Why pay for a diagnostic?
A code tells you which system flagged a fault, not which part failed. The same code can come from a sensor, a wire, a vacuum leak or the part itself. We read the code, then test the part behind it, so you are not paying to replace parts on a guess.
Will clearing the code fix it?
No. Clearing the code turns the light off, not the problem. If the fault is still there, the car finds it again and the light comes back, usually within a few drives.
Can a loose gas cap really turn the light on?
Yes. A cap that is loose or has a worn seal lets fuel vapor escape, and the system flags it. Tighten it until it clicks. If the light is still on after a few days of normal driving, bring it in.
