How long do tires really last in South Florida?

The number on the box is a mileage number. Down here, mileage is usually not what finishes a tire. Heat and sun age the rubber faster than the miles wear the tread, so a lot of tires in South Florida come off because they are old, not because they are bald.

Why Florida is hard on tires

Rubber hardens as it ages. Heat speeds that up, and so does direct sun on a car that lives in a driveway or an open lot. A hardened tire has less grip, especially on wet roads, and it is more likely to crack in the sidewall. You can have good tread depth and still have a tire that stops poorly in an afternoon downpour on I-95.

Check two things: tread and age

Tread

Every tire has wear bars molded across the bottom of the tread grooves. When the tread is level with them, the tire is done. Well before that, it gets worse at clearing water, which matters in a place where the rain comes down all at once.

Age

The DOT code on the sidewall ends in four digits: the week and year the tire was made. A tire ending in 1421 was made in the 14th week of 2021. Many manufacturers recommend replacing tires at six years regardless of tread, and in this climate it is worth looking hard at anything that old.

Signs a tire needs replacing

• Tread at or near the wear bars
• Cracking in the sidewall from the sun
• A tire that keeps losing air
• You can see belts or cords anywhere
• Tires that are over six years old by the date code

The cheapest tire is not always the best value

A cheap tire that needs replacing after 12,000 miles is not a deal if a better option would have lasted a lot longer. Make the tires you buy last longer

1. Check the pressures monthly, cold, against the placard in the driver's door jamb
2. Get an alignment with every new set, so they do not wear on one edge
3. Have them balanced, so a shake at highway speed does not cup the tread
4. Park in the shade when you can
