Do I need two new tires or all four?
You cannot decide whether a vehicle needs two tires or four from the number of visibly worn tires alone. Start with the vehicle manufacturer's requirements, then compare the actual tires, their condition and measured tread depths. All-wheel-drive systems can have specific matching requirements.
For a Pompano Beach driver replacing one damaged tire, the important question is not simply whether the same size is available. It is whether the proposed replacement works with the other tires on that vehicle.
Bring the whole set into the decision
Ask for tread measurements on all four tires and identification of the exact models already installed. The size printed on a sidewall is only one part of the match. Different tire models and different wear levels can create meaningful differences.
Michelin notes that mismatched tire diameters on some AWD vehicles can affect the drivetrain. The acceptable difference depends on the vehicle. There is no single tread-depth rule that should be applied to every AWD car or SUV.
A useful question is: “What does the manufacturer require for this model, and how do the measured tires compare?” That turns a vague recommendation into an explanation you can evaluate.
Where should two new tires go?
When replacing two tires on a vehicle where that replacement is permitted, USTMA recommends placing the new pair on the rear axle to help maintain wet-road stability. That advice can surprise drivers of front-wheel-drive cars, who expect the better pair to go where the engine drives the wheels.
Vehicle-specific fitment and rotation restrictions still matter. Some vehicles use different front and rear sizes. Do not swap tires between axles without confirming the approved arrangement.
Compare the options using the same information
- Exact tire brand, model, size, load index and speed rating.
- Measured tread depth and condition of each existing tire.
- Vehicle manufacturer matching requirements.
- Which axle will receive the replacements.
- Whether uneven wear points to another problem worth checking.
- Total installed price and the manufacturer's applicable warranty terms.
If the remaining pair is worn unevenly or damaged, buying only two may leave an unresolved problem. If all tires are compatible and the manufacturer permits the plan, replacing fewer than four may be reasonable. The measurements and requirements should drive that decision.
Ask about the next maintenance step
A replacement plan should include how the set will be maintained. Ask about rotation where permitted, pressure checks and the condition that caused the original wear. Keeping the receipt and tread measurements gives you a useful baseline.
Avoid choosing by brand name alone. A matching brand can still contain many models with different designs. Ask for the exact model on the quote.
